Welcome to SCU Unimentor.
I wrote an email to a fellow I have been mentoring as he is setting up for studying Technology Education. Although the name has changed a little bit, some of the units still cross over or have been revised. In the new course, there is a requirement for students to study both a literacy (English) and a Maths unit as per the Federal Government's move to increase graduating teacher's literacy and numeracy.
If you are starting out, I recommend starting out with the introductory units as you begin, so that you have time to concentrate on getting to know the university system and blackboard. Here are the first four units I recommend when starting out:

If you are starting out, I recommend starting out with the introductory units as you begin, so that you have time to concentrate on getting to know the university system and blackboard. Here are the first four units I recommend when starting out:
EDU10003
Learning Technologies
DES10634
Essential Technologies
EDU10128
Introduction to Technology Teaching
And
maybe ENG10010
The
first 3 give you a starting point of what to expect in teaching. DES10634 is a
workshop where you get to do hands on work over the holidays at a school- mine
was John Paul College at Coffs Harbour in the April holidays. This unit is a per-requisite for your metal and timber units. Then maybe do your language and
literacy unit to get the ball rolling. These are not heavy units, but it gets
you going so you can concentrate on getting organised and in rhythm with your
degree.
If
you can schedule in History of D&T over a semester 3 somewhere, you will
find it easier going when its too hot to think in summer (trust me I have
struggled with 2 & 3 units over summer and it nearly killed me). Be careful to not overload yourself
with units in semester 3, you’ll go into it knackered and with the heat of
summer and the business of Christmas, it can bring you unstuck. I did ISY00324
digital media 1 & ISY0035 digital media 2 over summer and really enjoyed
it. The hands on stuff in semester 3 is good.
Some
recommendations I would give with starting off are:
- Get yourself Endnote X7 for your referencing and get to know how to use it- it will save you so much time
- Sign up to the SCU BTech Ed Facebook group
- Borrow your required reading books for your unit before it starts because everyone else will want them at the same time when the unit starts
- There is a option for getting photocopies of readings in the library portal
- Use the excel spreadsheet attached and edit it for yourself with assessment due dates and other important information- assessment due dates can be found in the unit guide. It automatically updates to “today’s” date
- Get as many people as you can around you that are doing the degree and get contacts at your workshops
- If you are in QLD- Sign up to the list server for DET QLD Managing ITD teachers (Industrial Tech and Design- same as D&T) http://discussions.eq.edu.au/cgi-bin/wa?INDEX
- Download every unit into a folder system by year/semester/unit
- Adjust Word or your word processor to auto save as frequent as possible
- Get Youtube downloader if you are on Mozilla Firefox and download videos from Youtube
- Make yourself a folder for saving web page bookmarks for teaching
- Begin building a resource folder
- Get yourself an external hard drive to save your uni work onto
- Buy exercise folders and write summaries of what you read for your units or required readings and use different coloured highlighters to highlight key words
- If you need to know anything or are stuck- ASK!
- Take rest breaks at least every hour if you’re in front of the PC, get up and walk around and allow time for doing something away from uni work with your family
- Eat properly and get good sleep- very important
See the website links below, and resources to kick you off. Ask me when you have been
told to buy a text book, I have some I have bought that I can scan or lend to
you, and some eBooks. There is a SCU textbook group on Facebook I recommend
joining. I bought some of my textbooks from ABE books in the UK as they have a
similar education system to us for Design and Technology. Teachers seem to hang
onto textbooks and are often hard to find- shop online and shop around for good prices- even Gumtree is a good place to look.
I
have been very lucky that I have a wife who was studying education with me and
who studied law to help me get on my feet. It can be a really stressful time
and really trying on your self discipline, and sometimes can feel isolating,
but it is important to keep a focus on your family and friends- because uni is demanding but it isn’t
everything and often if you
fail an assignment- you get to resubmit.
Contact
me as often as you need throughout your degree, and I will walk you through
what you need. You will find that this profession is very different to
everything else- there is a large network of teachers who are more than happy
to give you time to help, like a band of brothers.
One thing that has helped me stay on track and manage my time efficiently between uni/ work/ family/ life is a spreadsheet with a built in calendar that has a formula for "today's date" built into it. I load in the assignment due dates for each unit- found in the unit overview in MySCU (View PDF or web page- assessment), the weight of the assessment, due time and word count- all colour coded to get a clear idea of my workload and deadlines. If you have difficulty- email me and I will send you a template.
This is what it looks like.
Anyway, all the best with the semester, and if you need help- don't hesitate to ask email me- danielpatch@hotmail.com.
Regards,
Dan
